Dr. A. Ramasamy's "Struggle for Freedom of Languages in India" is a well documented work of history of the recent past. The Anti-Hindi Agitation, which raged in the sixties of the twentieth century catapulted the Dravida Munnetra kazhagam to power in Tamil Nadu. Its impact on Indian polity is felt even today. The book traces the history of the agitation from its origin in the early years of the last century through its course and describes graphically the climax it reaches in the sixties. This monumental work by a historian of repute is significant and relevant because it recommends measures that can and should be taken to resolve the language issue permanently.

The author has meticulously collected and collated materials for his book from various sources both primary and secondary. He has taken pains to interview many persons directly involved in the Agitation, who range from leaders of the day like K.Kamaraj and M.Bhaktavatsalam to the men belonging to the cadres and the student community. The work testifies to the keen interest the author had for his subject and to the sustained labour he had put in to collect and preserve newspaper cuttings and photographs. Though the author himself was an active participant in the dramatic events, he has reported, as a true historian, the struggle against language supremacy in an unbiased and dispassionate manner.

The book is written in simple readable English and interest is sustained throughout the book.
