MANITHAM & ANGIKAR Jointly organized World Human Right Day, 2004 at Dhaka, Bangladesh. On 10 December morning we all assembled at our seat of great national pride, National Martyr's Memorial Mausoleum situated 35 km from Dhaka, the capital city. Angikar Bangladesh and its health rights ally, Gonoshasthya Kendra organised the event. Solemn Pledge for continuing the caravan of Human Rights struggle was the core event. MANITHAM was also announced as the co-sponsor of the program. Representatives from United Nations Human Rights Commission, incidentally visiting Bangladesh for HR training program and they obliged to attend. Fransisco Marrioetta from UNHRC spoke on the occasion. The event had a nice emotional touch considering the venue. Event-venue related emotion, architecture and aesthetic point intermingled with the cry for rights.

Manitham & Avinashilingam University celebrates World Human Rights Day, 2004

A Seminar on 'Human Rights in Practice' was held at Avinashilingam Deemed University[ADU], in connection with the celebration of Manitham World Human Rights Day, 2004.

Delivering the presidential address, ADU vice-chancellor Mrs.Saroja Prabhakaran said everyone should know their rights and stand for the same. She stressed on the importance of women's freedom and asked everyone to create a suitable environment for that.

Adv. S. Balamurugan, member of the organisation, spoke on 'Atrocities against Tribals'. He said that human rights are violated each and every day in the name of sex, caste, creed, religion. He detailed on the atrocities faced by the tribals of Sathyamangala, who were ill-treated both by the police and the henchmen of the forest brigand.

Ms. Menaka Chinnathambi, also a member of 'Manitham', spoke on 'Dalit Rights and Atrocities' said that there are over 240 million Dalits in India and most of them are discriminated by the society. She added that the Globalisation has worsened the condition of Dalits.

The ADU conducted the seminar in collaboration with 'Manitham' an NGO, which works for the promotion of Human Rights and Protecting Environment.
